samples. Dr Marcus Eriksen indoctrinates the viewers not only how to be efficient in the laboratory, but how to reflect on the very nature of science.

"Synthetic Sea: Plastic in the Open Ocean"
(March 2001) see preview
In the open ocean, graceful dolphins glide beneath the surface in pursuit
of fish, their primary food. Many of these fish feed on minute prolific
creatures called zoo-plankton. Nowadays, zoo-plankton share the surface
waters with ever increasing numbers of tiny plastic particles. This is
a problem since fish, birds, and whales are consuming plastic in addition
to plankton. Petroleum based plastics are non-biodegradable and most float
near the surface. Any plastic entering the ocean remains there, continually
breaking into smaller and smaller pieces until it becomes ingested or
is deposited as a grain of synthetic sand on a distant shore. The Algalita
Marine Research Foundation is conducting open ocean experiments to quantify
and study this global environmental dilemma. SYNTHETIC SEA is a short
film depicting the essence of this marine pollution research.
